Welcome to the Itchenor K6 Class Website!

Welcome to the ISC K6 class page. We're Itchenor's newest adopted fleet and the fastest-growing too. The K6 offers a unique blend of high performance (the same speed as an RS800) and stability (half the all-up weight of 250kg is in the keel bulb).

It also offers some of the best racing, with a high standard and very committed turnouts. We have one race day every fortnight, and it's not uncommon to see starts of six or seven boat all enjoying nip and tuck racing over a range of short windward/leewards and longer harbour courses.

For those who travel, there are open meetings as well as the Nationals (this year in Torbay in September) and Europeans in May at Bruinesse in Holland.

Come and see us before or after we’re sailing;  many days we can get you out for a spin then and there. If you’d like to arrange a longer test sail, or crew, contact Roger Ewart Smith by email roger.ewart.smith@rothschild.com

Another new boat joins the fleet!

Paul Young, MD of K6 builder Rondar Boats, is the latest new Itchenor member bringing a K6 to the club! Rondar has been the builder from the start, and Paul is keen to spend (even) more time racing K6's and promoting the class.  We're delighted to welcome him and his as-yet-unamed boat to the fleet and look forward to the added competition and humour on and off the water!

Four Itchenor boats at the Nationals

Four of the Itchenor K6 Fleet competed at the Nationals at Falmouth in September. Our harbour-sailing skills were not tested to the full, with strong winds throughout the series. Nevertheless, we filled 5th, 6th, 14th and 15th places, with some extraordinary conditions and tales to tell!

K6 Open Meeting June 4/5 2011 - report and results

Itchenor Sailing club held their annual K6 open over the weekend of the 4th and 5th June. The 7 home boats were joined by visitors from near (Hayling) and far (James Wilson and Alan Marantz all the way from the American Yacht Club in New York).

The fleet were treated to varied, and sometimes wild, conditions and some exceptionally close racing with only 5 points separating the first 5 boats and 6 different winners of the 8 races.

Saturday consisted of 5 races in winds gusting over 25 knots resulting in one or two boat and boat handling failures. The tight windward leeward course kept everyone close together and there was multiple place changing as people spotted the shifts upwind and rode the gusts downwind. It is testament to the fleet's boat handling ability and adherence to the rules that mark rounding generally passed without incident. However, it was noted that a few boats did not allow enough room for the mark warps in the strong tide and decided to hook themselves up on several occasions. Jonathan Calascione/Piers Tucker/Myles Mence had the best of the first day recording two wins. The other winners were Neil Davison/Andrew Younge/James Davison, Fraser Elms/Georgie Smith and Roger Ewart Smith/Andy Carroll.

After the hectic day on the water the club lived up to its reputation with tea and cakes after racing and later a superb evening meal which all the fleet attended.

Sunday looked like it might be a repeat performance but without the sun, however the wind steadily died and by the last race was below10 knots allowing some of  the lighter and 2 person crews to mix it with the leaders. The lighter breeze also brought the tide more into play especially downwind. The locals, however, seemed no more effective at navigating it than the visitors. The first two races were on longer sausage course than Saturday's short sharp races. Fraser and Georgie managed to win the first while Peter Kirkby/Richard Baker won the second. The final race of the day was a scenic harbour tour and gave a first victory to David Hitchcock/Ian Nicholson who had been incapacitated on Saturday. Having sailed to the event Fraser and Georgie headed back to Hayling - disappointed believing they had blown the regatta with a poor last race when in fact their first seven results had already given them victory. This was Fraser and Georgies first event win and with so many different race winners it seems that competition in the fleet is as intense as ever with no one boat dominating.

K6 enthusiasm catching...

March 27th 20011 saw the launch of a new Itchenor K6 - Airshock 2 - jointly owned and sailed by Neil Davison and Andrew Yonge, who upgraded from the boat they purchased in 2010 for their first K6 season at Itchenor. "We've a lot to blame Peter Dann for', they said at the launch "if he hadn't got us hooked on K6 sailing by insisting we have a trial sail, our bank balances would be a lot healthier".

With more prospective owners showing interest this year, and much muttering among owners about new sails and other gear, enthusiasm for the K6 is catching....

Open Day 16th May

K6s will be at the heart of the Itchenor Open Day on Sunday 16th. Making the most of our schnizophrenic is-it-a-dinghy-is-it-a-keelboat status we'll have a boat on the stage for people to gawp at and one in the water to go sailing. A great opportunity to come and have a go. Let Peter kow if you'd like to sail and we can book you a slot, or just tip up on the day, bringing some sunshine with you please.

2010 Programme

Rather late in the day, and with profuse apologies from the class captain, the 2010 programme can be downloaded here

Some highlights:

ISC Open Meeting 12th/13th June

Usual format we hope: short racing Saturday, slightly longer races Sunday. Big Dinner Saturday night - more details to come

Nab Tower Race 1st August

Now acquiring legendary status. Start muggin up on the navigation if you want to avoid the Whoops! trophy this year...

Itchenor Regatta 14th August

Big opportunity to show off how much fun we're having, even before the tea arrives

National Championships, Torquay 9th-12th September

Not to be missed trip to the English Riviera for the best sailing in the UK and one of the friendliest clubs (outside Chichester Harbour of course). With a personal guided tour of the night life from our very own Dominic "Trust me I'm from Torquay" Stanislaus

Owen Trophy, Long Island Sound 21-24th October

Not on Long Island as stated in the programme, sorry. Fans of islands can go to Hayling, the rest say New York is a better bet in October. Details to come.

Dinner at the RORC 18th March

A jolly time was had by all, so jolly in fact that I forgot to take any photographs. So you'll just have to imagine the gay scenes as first Robin and Clive stepped up to take the applause as winners of the season's points, then the rousing reception for Fraser and Georgie, deserving winners of the Whoops! Trophy for outstanding lack of seamanship, in this case embaying themselves off their very own Hayling seafront.

New members go annoyingly quickly

Welcome to Neil Davison and Andrew Yonge, newest additions to the fleet with GBR159 Air Shock. Showing a marked lack of respect towards the established members of the fleet they kicked off the season with an overall win at the Easter weekend. To make mattters worse we will soon be joined by Jonathan Calascione who has been known to go even faster than Robin and Clive.
